FG Approves 2014 Confab Report
FG Approves 2014 Confab Report – The Nigerian Federal
Executive Council the other day approved the report of the 2014 National
Conference for implementation.
According to Leadership, the Federal Executive Council (FEC), which gave the
approval, also approved road and office accommodation projects worth several
billions of naira.
Minister of culture and
tourism and outgoing minister of information, Chief Edem Duke, disclosed this
while briefing State House correspondents after the weekly FEC meeting presided
over by President Goodluck Jonathan.
He was accompanied by the
secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), Anyim Pius Anyim, and the
minister of works, Mike Onolememen.
Duke said with the
approval, the federal government now had a platform on which to direct relevant
agencies to commence the implementation of aspects of the report.
The minister added that
the report was unique in the sense that it did not stop at recommendations and
resolutions, but went further to suggest methods for their implementation.
Other members of the
committee included the Minister of Transport, Idris Umar; Minister of State for
Finance, Bashir Yuguda; Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka; Minister of State
for Federal Capital Territory Administration, Olajumoke Akinjide and Minister
of Works, Mike Onolememen.
Explaining further on
FEC’s deliberations, the SGF, said the council approved that the methods
recommended by the conferees be adopted as the first steps towards implementing
the report.
He said the
recommendations requiring input from the legislative arm of government would be
compiled and vetted by the attorney-general of the federation (AGF), Mohammed
Adoke, for onward transmission to the National Assembly.
The SGF said, “Let me say
that what happened in council today (yesterday) was for the council to approve
that those modalities be adopted in implementing the report.
“Recall that
when the report was submitted to Mr President, he set up a committee under the
chairmanship of the AGF and the committee has looked at the report in its
entirety. They have looked at the recommendations and they have advised Mr
President that they were implementable.”
Anyim said that the
president had been making promises to the effect that he was going to implement
the recommendations of the conference.
“So, the
report coming to the council today is the first leg of taking concrete steps
towards implementing the recommendations and resolutions of the conference,” he
said.
“The second approval was
also that there are recommendations that have to do with policy matters and
those recommendations are necessarily for implementation by either federal
agencies or state agencies or local government areas.
“So, it’s was
approved in council that all policy matters that require action by federal
agencies would be referred to the agencies for immediate implementation and all
that require action by state governments or state agencies should be referred
to the states for their immediate implementations, and same for local
government.”
FEC also approved road
contracts to the tune of about N39.6 billion.
The 2014 National Conference was inaugurated by President Goodluck
Jonathan on 17 March 2014 in Abuja. The conference had in attendance about 492
delegates which represented a cross-section of Nigerians including the
professional bodies group.
The Conference was headed
by retired Chief Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi following a plenary session that
lasted for weeks.
